Mae Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She is the first African American woman to travel in space. Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama, in 1956. She attended Stanford University, where she earned a degree in chemical engineering. She then went on to earn a medical degree from Cornell University. After completing her medical training, Jemison worked as a Peace Corps doctor in Africa. In 1987, she was selected by NASA to become an astronaut. She flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992, becoming the first African American woman in space.
