The Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 were three nonviolent protests along the 54-mile highway from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Organized to demand voting rights for African Americans facing segregationist oppression, these marches amplified the voting rights movement and directly contributed to the passage of the landmark Voting Rights Act later that year.
